CALL FOR PAPERS

XX International Conference of the Society for Human Ecology

Bar Harbor, Maine . October 22 to 25, 2014

Session Title : Human Dimensions of Marine Systems

Human societies are reliant upon a vast number of ecosystem services for survival, including those provided directly and indirectly by marine systems. For example, humans draw on marine systems for food production, transportation, energy production, economic development, and recreation. Further, marine systems act as sinks for the waste that results from modern production systems. Various sources of land, water, and air pollution culminate in ocean systems such as agricultural runoff, waste from fossil fuel production, nuclear waste, and toxic pollutants. As a result, marine systems are undergoing major ecological transformations, and these changes have numerous implications for human societies.

This panel aims to bring together scholars conducting research on the human dimensions of marine systems. The goal of this panel is to enhance social science and interdisciplinary research on marine systems. It will explore some of the numerous ways in which humans are affecting marine systems, and how they in turn affect us. Some of the topics the panel seeks to discuss include : food production, fishing, aquaculture, energy production, climate change, ocean acidification, coastal development, tourism and recreation, marine planning and management, marine pollution, marine ecosystems and human well-being, technological change and marine systems, indigenous communities and marine systems, coupled human and marine systems, development, globalization, and marine systems, social movements and marine ecological change, and human impacts on marine biodiversity.
